When
our government was first formed we sent a representative off on
horseback to make
decisions for us at the state and federal levels. We ran our local
government with a town meeting where everyone could have a voice in
local decision-making.
Some large
and small cities still have town meetings and local issues are resolved
by popular vote. Most of us, however, have been convinced by politicians
that our local government is too big and too complex for the average
citizen to participate.
Common Sense
Government recognizes that most of the bigness and complexity is by
design to keep the public in the dark while politicians and bureaucrats
work the system.
We live in an
age of awesome advances in communications. We withdraw money from our
bank at an electronic box in the grocery store. We buy and sell stocks
on the New York Stock Exchange from our home computer. We send pictures
across the country on a pocket size cell phone. Our children can do
research in the Library of Congress from their home or school computer.
We can sit on the beach with a wireless lap top computer and run a
business half a world away. Still, we must physically go down to the
voting booth on Election Day to cast our vote on paper ballots on
antiquated machinery to select someone to make decisions for us over
the next four years, this is hardly better than sending them off on
horseback.
Why do we do
this?? Because incumbent politicians like it that way! Keep your input
to a minimum and making the voting process difficult favors those
already in power.
Common Sense
Government believes that any significant decisions made by local
government could be put to a referendum via E-mail on your home
computer. If a significant number of responses were received, city
council would be bound to follow the will of the people.
Common Sense
Government believes that all elections should be conducted through the
mail or via computer. This would significantly increase the number of
citizen’s participation in the voting process and reduce the cost of the
voting process by 30%.
